What Reactivity Training Is (and Isn’t)
When people talk about reactivity in dogs, they often witness barking, lunging, or growling at other dogs, people, or moving things. But at its core, reactivity is an emotional response. It’s not a dog being “naughty” or “defiant” – it’s a dog who is overwhelmed and doesn’t know how else to cope.
That’s why true reactivity training is not about shutting behaviours down. Using tools like prong collars, e-collars, or choke chains may suppress the behaviour in the moment, but they don’t change how the dog feels. The underlying fear, stress, arousal or frustration is still there. In fact, punishing reactions can actually make the feelings stronger and cause bigger explosions later on.
So, what is reactivity training?
Changing Feelings, Not Just Behaviours
Reactivity training focuses on addressing the root cause: your dog’s emotions. The goal isn’t to force them to stop reacting – it’s to help them feel differently about their triggers so they naturally respond in calmer ways.
Two powerful, evidence-based techniques are:
Desensitisation
This means exposing your dog to their triggers at a level they can cope with – far enough away, quiet enough, or in small enough doses that they don’t go “over threshold.” This is what we’ll use calm demo dogs for.Counter-Conditioning
Here, we pair the scary or frustrating trigger with something positive. Over time, the trigger predicts good things, and your dog’s feelings shift from negative to positive.
We will also focus on:
- Management
Management is key for reactive dogs because it prevents them from getting into situations they can’t handle, which means fewer outbursts and setbacks. Good management isn’t a shortcut—it’s what makes real training possible and protects both your dog’s progress and everyone’s safety.
- Correct Handling Techniques
Correct handling is vital for reactive dogs because it keeps them under threshold, prevents them from rehearsing unwanted behaviours, and helps them feel safe. Good handling doesn’t just stop reactions in the moment – it creates the foundation for lasting progress and keeps everyone safe.
Together, reactivity training that relies on these things changes the emotional story your dog tells themselves about the world. Instead of bracing for danger, they learn to expect safety and rewards.
Why This Matters
When your dog’s feelings change, their behaviour changes naturally. Instead of relying on force to control them, we build lasting confidence and trust. Reactivity training done this way leads to real progress – calmer walks, safer outings, and a stronger bond between you and your dog.
What Reactivity Training Isn’t About:
- Reactivity training is not about forcing socialisation or seeking play with other dogs.
A reactive dog doesn’t need to play with other dogs they see, and many don’t even wish or enjoy that kind of interaction. Pushing them into greetings or group play can make their stress and reactivity worse, not better. - It’s not about making your dog “love” other dogs or people.
Some dogs will never want canine best friends or enjoy being patted by strangers – and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to change who your dog is, but to help them feel safe and calm in the presence of their triggers. - It’s not about instant fixes or quick obedience.
Reactivity training isn’t about snapping on a prong collar, choking off the behaviour, or demanding perfect manners right away. Suppressing emotions doesn’t create lasting change – it just buries the problem!
Remember, your dog isn’t giving you a hard time – they’re having a hard time. With patience, positive training, and the right strategies, you can help them view the world in a different light. Because lasting change comes from changing emotions, not punishing expressions.

Commonly Asked Questions - Check These Before Booking with Us!
I can only do Sundays, can I book for 8 consecutive Sundays? Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee Sunday-only availability. With just one trainer on Sundays, those spots are reserved for clients who truly can’t attend during the week. We also avoid outdoor park sessions at peak weekend times to give dogs the best chance of success.
The good news is we offer plenty of weekday slots, including after hours, with two trainers available for flexibility. If your schedule is limited, let us know before booking – we’ve always been able to find a solution with our clients.
Can you do Saturdays? We need rest as well and do not work on Saturdays. We will provide you with a minimum of 5 days of availability each week.
Can I bring more than one dog with me? No. First, two dogs can not be trained at the same time: reactivity training requires individual training. Therefore, we need to be able to focus on the dog, and the dog can not have any other distractions, such as another family dog, around. Second, our pricing is for one dog only, more dogs mean more work!
Can I bring my partner or children with me? You can bring your partner or any other adult family members. However, children are not allowed to attend the lessons since reactivity is a serious behavioural issue in dogs, and children can not be involved in this type of training, nor is it safe for them to be present.
Can I share the lessons between my two dogs, who both need this training? No, the program can only be used for the same dog each week.
Do I have to participate in the lessons myself, or do I just drop off my dog? Yes — your participation is essential. We don’t offer a “drop-off and train” service, because lasting results come from you and your dog learning together. Our role is to guide and coach you through the training process, but it’s your practice and consistency at home that make the biggest difference. Think of it like a personal trainer: we can show you the techniques, but you need to be the one working with your dog day-to-day. This way, your dog learns to respond to you, not just the trainer.
What if I decide the training is not for me, can I get my money back? We do not provide refunds for change of mind or for pre-paid packages, consider and read through the details carefully before booking with us.
Do you guarantee results? At Eazy Dog Training, we don’t offer guarantees — and here’s why. Training isn’t something we can do to your dog; it’s a partnership between you, your dog, and us as trainers. Just like a personal trainer at the gym can’t guarantee you’ll hit your fitness goals unless you consistently follow the plan, we can’t control what happens outside of lessons.
What we can guarantee is:
A clear, structured training plan tailored to your dog
Proven, positive training methods
Full support and guidance to help you succeed
If the plan is followed and practised consistently, you will see results. The dogs and owners who put in the work always make progress. Training is about building habits, communication, and trust — and with consistency, the results come.
