Private Training or Group Classes – Which Is Right for You?

Think of it like the difference between a group fitness class and a one-on-one personal training session.

Group Dog Training Classes provide a structured learning environment where multiple dogs and owners work through the same exercises together. They’re ideal for teaching foundation skills, building focus around distractions, and helping owners learn effective training techniques.

Private Dog Training offers individualised coaching tailored to your dog, your goals, and your specific challenges. Just as a personal trainer creates a program designed for you, a private trainer can focus on issues unique to your dog and adapt the training plan as you progress.

Group classes are excellent for general training and social learning, while private training allows for a more customised approach and targeted support – and is often required for more complex training. Many owners find a combination of both works best!

A really fantastic puppy class. Anina is a talented dog trainer and she’s pretty good at teaching humans as well. Highly recommended.

Thank you Anniina for your home visit last week to provide some guidance for our puppy and separation training. Your valuable advice and tools have put our minds at ease about next steps and the confidence to leave her when we need to and more importantly have her be comfortable when leaving. We are implementing ‘Disneyland’ daily and it Is working well for all of us. Such a positive experience when navigating a new puppy!

Anniina was fantastic in helping us with our puppy, the classes were very informative and fun. We saw a lot of progress with our training and will definitely return.

Commonly asked questions:

Puppies (from 8 weeks of age up to 16 weeks):
Puppy school is recommended, or private in-home training for puppies up to 5 months of age.

Teen & young adult dogs (over 16 weeks of age –2 years):
Teen dog classes help with foundations and common adolescent behaviours.

Basic obedience (16 weeks of age +):
Group classes cover sit, down, stay, recall, leave it, place training, heel, loose leash walking, calm greetings, not jumping on people, engagement and impulse control.

When private training is needed

If your dog struggles with anxiety, over-arousal, fixation, or reactivity around dogs or people, group classes aren’t suitable. Signs include barking or fixating even when using high-value treats.

Private sessions are also required for reactivity, aggression, fear, separation anxiety, resource guarding, fence reactivity, or any home-based behaviours. They allow training to be tailored to your dog’s needs and environment.

The rule of thumb is that group classes are general obedience and puppy training, not tailored to your individual needs while private training is fully tailored to you!

Choosing a class depends on your training needs!

Here’s some common guidelines:

  • Puppies up to 16 weeks of age: Puppy school
  • Older puppies and teen dogs from 16 weeks of age up to 2 years: teen dog class
  • Want solid basic obedience skills such as sit, down, stay, come, leave it, place training, heel, polite greeting manners such as not jumping on people etc.: Obedience class
  • Have already done obedience training? Advanced obedience class
  • Recall issues: Recall training seminar
  • Struggle with pulling and lunging on a leash: Stop pulling leash seminarNote! Not Suitable for reactive dogs!

If unsure, you can find all the details including the class plans for what’s covered in the classes in our online training calendar above. Simply click on the class you are interested in and check the details.

None of our group classes are suitable for reactive dogs. We do not address reactivity issues in our group classes and all the dogs in the classes must be able to cope in an indoors space near other dogs and people without barking, lunging or fixating.

Reactivity training requires private, tailored behavioural training, check our popular reactivity training option here!

Obedience training for dogs focuses on teaching them basic commands and improving their overall behaviour, ensuring they are well-mannered and responsive to their owner’s instructions. The primary goal is to create a well-behaved dog that listens to commands and exhibits proper behaviour in various situations – even around distractions!

Eazy Dog Training runs a variety of obedience and dog manners classes for 3-4 weeks, depending on the class.

Training includes learning basic manners and obedience, education on how dogs learn, and the classes move on to more advanced exercises gradually every week. Our classes cover training such as sit, down, stay, not jumping up, walking on a loose lead with distractions, coming when called with distractions, ‘leave it’, focus exercises, engagement training, learning a solid ‘drop’ cue, maintaining control around distractions and so on.

Our classes suitable for adult dogs:

Obedience clas, advanced obedience class, teen dog classes up to 2 years of age, recall training seminar and leash training seminar.

Our puppy schools and teen classes are always run in private indoor locations so dogs can join as early as after the 1st vaccine at 8 weeks of age. Obedience classes can be run outdoors so the age limit is 16 weeks, after the last vaccination!

It’s best to try and choose a class you would be able to commit to the whole length of the course, however if you miss a class we can provide a catch up lesson in one of our other available classes or you can catch up at home via our online training if available for you particular class!

Our dog training methods are based on rewarding the desired behaviour and motivating dogs to repeat the desired behaviour.

And rewards aren’t always food! You can use anything your dog likes, a favourite toy, favourite food or even a game. However, rewards will be faded out eventually. But at the beginning it’s important to use them!

A motivated, mentally stimulated dog is a happier dog. Dog training should never be frustrating or a chore! It should always be fun for both you and your dog.
