Basic obedience training is very important for every dog. Good dog manners make the relationship between a dog and owner a lot easier and enjoyable. No one enjoys a dog who can not calm down around people and other dogs, who pulls your arm out of the socket every time you step outside and barks franctically at everyone, and everything, outside. Of course, my examples were a bit extreme. But there’s probably still something you could improve in your dog’s basic obedience skills, right? Most importantly, teaching your dog at least some basic obedience is a vital part of being a responsible dog owner.

In my 4-week dog obedience training courses we focus on all the important manners and obedience skills that make a dog a pleasure to be around. No more chasing them around the park or embarrasing moments when your dog destroys someone’s picnic at the park! You will learn great impulse control and focus exercises to calm down your dog in exciting situations and to keep them under control at all times. And the best part is, we practise those skills with other dogs and people – after all, that’s how it is in the real world!

My adult dog training classes include all the basic commands such as sit, down, stay, come and heel. We also learn impulse control exercises such as leave it and passing and greeting other dogs in a calm manner. And we focus on those dog manners that many people struggle with, like pulling on a lead and jumping on people.

Basic dog manners training can seem either very simple or extremely difficult, depending on skill level. As a person who has competed in obedience training, I’m used to seeing amazing skills from dogs in trial rings. It is truly unbelievable what dogs can do when trained consistently to a high level. That kind of training obviously takes a lot of work, however any dog can and should learn at least the most basic and necessary commands and manners for everyday life situations.

Eazy Dog Training Manners and Basic Obedience Class in Sydney Includes

Sit
This is something every owner generally teaches their dog. But very often the training is unfinished ending up with a dog who can only sit for a little while, with a treat or when using a hand signal. I’ll teach you how to keep control of your dog, no matter the situation, using this basic command.
Down
Lying down makes a dog more relaxed and calm. This is a helpful command when you need to stay somewhere longer and you want your dog to calm down and wait.
Stay
Teaches your dog to remain still, calm, and in one place. A very helpful command for many situations.
Come
This is one of the most important commands, and often struggled with. Recall should get your dog to come to you immediately upon your command. You should begin to teach this command to your puppy as soon as they recognise their name. This command could potentially help you protect your puppy from harm.
Heel
Teaches your dog to stay close to you as you walk, with or without a lead. Very useful when passing something you don’t want your dog to get interested in.
Leave it
An excellent command to use when you encounter something you don’t want your dog to touch. It takes a lot of focus and willpower from your dog especially when you want them to leave food. But when mastered, it is very impressive command!
Impulse Control, Calming Down and Focus Exercises

My opinion as a professional dog trainer in Sydney is that most dog-related issues can be fixed with impulse control and focus. Dogs too need to learn that life isn’t just about fun and games. But this needs to be done in a way that allows them to learn new behaviours. From the dog’s point of view that is! This is what we focus on in my obedience classes in Sydney. We’ll train:

– Ignoring distractions, calming down while tied up and doing nothing, mat training and waiting patiently until released.

Positive reinforcement
There are many kinds of dog-training methods available for training your dog, but the Australian Veterinary Association recommends positive reinforcement as the best method. Positive reinforcement rewards wanted behaviour rather than punishing unwanted behaviour. This kind of training makes learning more enjoyable for your dog, and will help to strengthen the bond you have together.
