How to Teach the ‘High Five’ Trick

• Hold a treat in front of your sitting dog. Place the treat over his head a bit, so that he needs to try and reach for it. Wait for him to smell and lick your hand and work out how to get the treat.
• He will eventually try and paw at it to get the treat. As soon as he does, praise and give him the treat. Repeat until he’s trying to paw at the treat every time.
• Then start adding a word ‘shake,’ or ‘high five’ as he is in the process of pawing at your hand.
• Start placing your other hand under his paw when he’s lifting it. Praise and reward every time his paw touches your hand.
• Keep repeating this and you will be rewarded with a dog who knows how to ‘high five’.
