How to Greet People Politely
As a canine trainer in Inner West Sydney polite greeting manners is one of the most common reasons dog owners contact me for. It surely is quite embarrassing when your dog is jumping on people – and other dogs. Here’s my advice on training calmer greeting manners.
Manage the situation.
All learning needs management, especially when we are dealing with animals. This means controlling your dog’s environment so that she isn’t intermittently reinforced for jumping up. This means keeping her on a leash when she greets people, and providing very clear, simple instructions to everyone who wants to greet her. No one should reward her for jumping up!
Sometimes, this means sacrificing politeness for firmness when you meet one of those “Oh, it’s okay!” dog lovers. Be ready to tell them ‘no, it’s not okay’ and you’d love to have him pet your dog if he will follow instructions. At the end of the day, it’s all about your dog and the behaviours you need to deal with on daily basis. Random people and their opinions on what’s okey, don’t matter.
Reinforce sitting a lot!
Practise your ‘sit’ command making it reliable in every situation. This makes greetings a lot easier and more fun for every one!
Practice polite greetings.
New behaviours need practise. Practise getting your dog to sit down in front of people every time you meet someone. The more you do this, the easier it’ll get!
Dog Manners Classes are great for practise!
