Distractions are one of the biggest challenges in dog training. Other dogs, people, smells, noises—these can all make focus disappear. But focus isn’t something dogs either “have” or “don’t have.” It’s a skill that can be trained. It’s called distraction training for dogs.
At Eazy Dog Training, we teach dogs how to stay engaged with their handler even when the world around them gets busy.
1. Start Where Your Dog Can Succeed
Training focus doesn’t start in a crowded park. Begin in a low-distraction environment, such as your living room or backyard. Once your dog can focus there, gradually increase distractions.
2. Play the Name Game
Say your dog’s name once.
- When they look at you, reward immediately
- If they don’t respond, lower the distraction level
This builds the habit of checking in with you when they hear their name.
3. Hand Targeting for Instant Engagement
Teach your dog to touch their nose to your hand. This is a powerful focus tool that can be used anywhere—on walks, near other dogs, or when visitors arrive.
4. Use Short, Fun Sessions
Focus training should be brief and positive. Multiple 1–3 minute sessions each day are more effective than one long session.
5. Reward Choice, Not Perfection
If your dog looks away from a distraction and back to you—even for a second—reward it. Choosing you over the environment is a huge win.
6. Build Focus Into Everyday Life
Ask for eye contact before:
- Meals
- Opening doors
- Throwing a toy
- Starting a walk
This teaches your dog that focus is part of daily life, not just training time.
Takeaway
Strong focus creates better recall, calmer walks, and improved behaviour around distractions. By teaching focus as a skill, you set your dog up for success in every training area.
For dogs that struggle with overexcitement, pulling, or reactivity, Eazy Dog Training’s obedience classes, teen dog classes, and private behavioural training help build real-world focus that lasts via distraction training for dogs.
