Trick training is a lot of fun and a great way to improve communication with your dog. And the possibilities for dog tricks are almost endless! Check for yourself, youtube is full of trick tutorials!
Here’s an easy one to get started:
Hand Targeting
Training Technique:
- Start by presenting your hand to your dog while hiding a treat behind your thumb. As your dog moves towards your hand to get the treat and touches it with his nose, praise him and give him the treat. Repeat a few times.
- Then try presenting your hand without a treat in it. When he touches it looking for the treat, praise and reward quickly from your other hand.Repeat this exercise until your dog is touching your hand on a regular basis.
- When he is good at touching your hand, start associating the word ‘touch’ with it. Simply use a word ‘touch’ as his nose is touching your hand.
- When your dog is reliably touching your hand, start making it a bit more challenging by moving your hand. You can place it a bit lower or higher, or to the left or right of him etc.
- When your dog is doing well in the home, take this trick outside!
