Dog Park Rules

Did you know that even an off leash dog park has rules? Dog parks aren’t for dogs to go crazy and do what ever they feel like. They are for playtime and socialisation for well mannered dogs that are under control. Unfortunately this isn’t always the case and especially fenced dog parks can be very unpredictable places. I would not recommend them for young puppies. In my puppy school we focus on learning how to socialise in a safe and positive manner and how to act around other dogs and people. Here are some simple rules to follow.

1. Dog park is for friendly and social dogs.

There’s no way around it, if your dog shows aggression or antisocial behaviours towards other dogs, dog parks are the last place you should take your dog. Contact a dog trainer immediately to help you to figure out the cause and start positive training!

2. Don’t let your dog walk up to every dog and person

Dog parks are for everyone to enjoy and some people – and dogs – do not want to meet you. Respect it, and make sure your dog has a solid recall before letting them off lead.

3. Proof your basic obedience skills first

Even when a dog is off lead, they should still be under control. This means coming back to you when called, no matter what. Practise and proof your commands before giving your dog freedom. It should be earned, not given for free!
