Socialisation period is short!

The crucial socialisation period for dogs is actually very short, it’s the first 16 weeks. The more positive exposure and experiences a puppy has within this time frame the more confident and comfortable they will be in our human world. And that is the whole point of socialisation: to create a confident and balanced dog who loves being around other dogs, people and different sounds, sights and smells.

If dog’s aren’t socialised well, they remain fearful of new things!

The thing to understand about socialisation and why it is so crucial requires us to understand dogs’ natural behaviour first. In the wild, without us humans interfering, dogs as pack animals would only socialise within their own family unit, the pack. They would see other dogs and strangers as threats to their existence, not welcome them with open arms and they would stay away from new things as part of survival. And this is the very opposite we need from our dogs. In our human world, we need dogs to be happy and welcoming of others, not show aggression which would be their natural reaction. And through studies, we learnt how to succesfully do this: through early positive socialisation. So socialisation isn’t just something dog trainers likje to cash in on, it is required for well-behaved dogs.
