Positive Dog Trainer Sydney – How to Use Corrections

Dogs need boundaries and limits just like us humans and even if we focus on preventing issues there will be a time when you need to correct your dog’s behaviour. There’s is nothing wrong with that, but we need to do it in a right way, positively. There are ways to “correct” a dog without resorting to pain or intimidation. Here’s advice from your positive dog trainer in Sydney.

Positive corrections

Timeouts

A timeout stops the reinforcement. For example, if your dog is barking at you for attention, removing the dog from the situation all together will teach him that barking gets him the opposite result than what he wants. Other similar positive corrections are: walking away from your dog and putting toys/treats away.

However, timeouts require excellent timing and must be used consistently. Use timeout techniques sparingly, if at all.

Management, removing reinforcement and alternative behaviour

The best way to correct a dog is using these three steps: putting management into place, removing reinforcement, and teaching an alternative behaviour.

Keep in mind that stopping unwanted behaviors isn’t always straight forward. Sometimes you will need to re-evaluate and modify your training plans until you find the right formula for you and your dog!
