What to Do When Puppy Cries at Night?

It can be a very overwhelming experience to bring a new puppy home, not just for you but the puppy too. It’s a completely new situation for them, the very first time they are separated from their mum and littermates. This can be upsetting and it’s completely normal, we just need to know how to deal with it!

There are many good reasons to crate puppies overnight and it’s something I always do with my own pups. The most important is safety. Puppies can easily get into trouble if your house isn’t puppy-proofed and they are allowed to free roam. Crating helps with toilet training too since it restricts the puppy access to different areas. A crate also protects furniture etc. from sharp puppy teeth. But the first few nights can undoubtedly be rough. Here’s what to do if your new puppy cries at night in their crate.

Where to Put the Crate

This depends on the puppy’s temperament. I like to start the training the way I would do it later in life too, in a different room. My dogs don’t sleep with me. But it’s important to do it through positive training and use a crate big enough for a toilet area as well. I always leave my puppy in a crate with toys, a few chews (such as a bully stick) and a kong toy with a little bit of something delicious in it. So my pups are nicely distracted from being left alone. They might still whine a bit later but I simply ignore it for anything else but for a few calm toilet breaks during the night.

You could also start the process in your bedroom, but be quick to start moving the crate out of it if you don’t plan to let your dog sleep in your bedroom later on otherwise it can get very difficult when the pup has got used to it and doesn’t want to sleep elsewhere.
