Why Fading Out Treats Is Important?
We need to use positive reinforcement when training a dog. This usually means using treats. Toys and games would work as well, but most dogs love food. But using treats can easily lead up to a dog who does nothing without a treat – or does it? This is a common misunderstanding I face as a dog obedience trainer in Inner West Sydney.
Fading out treats is part of the training
Yes, if you never stop using treats when you train your dog, it is possible that you end up with a dog who does nothing without it. But using treats for every successful trick or obedience command is only the start of your training journey. When your dog has learnt the behaviour, you need to start fading out the treats to ensure obedience even when you don’t have treats. This means reducing the treats, hiding them when saying a command, not holding them in your hand in front of your dog etc. A dog must learn that even if they can’t see the reward, they can still get it. This leads up to a dog who doesn’t rely on treats.
