What is puppy training?
Puppy training is the process of teaching your puppy essential skills and good behaviour from an early age. It focuses on basic commands like sit, stay, come, and leash manners, as well as socialisation, impulse control, and problem-solving. Puppy training helps your dog develop good habits, builds a strong bond between you and your dog, and sets the foundation for a well-behaved dog in adulthood. It also addresses important skills for dealing with distractions, meeting new people or animals, and managing fear or anxiety in different environments.
What age can my puppy join your Zetland puppy classes?
Any time from 8 weeks to 16 weeks of age, after their first vaccination at 6 weeks of age. Puppy schools are never run in public parks, only in private and safe spaces with no increased health risks from un-known dogs.
When is the best time to join your Zetland puppy preschool?
As early as possible from 8 weeks of age. The best time to join puppy school is typically between 8 to 16 weeks of age. This is when puppies are most receptive to learning and socialising, and their critical developmental period for socialisation occurs. Early training helps set a strong foundation for good behaviour, builds confidence, and reduces the risk of behavioural issues in the future. However, even if your puppy is older, it’s never too late to start training and socialising them! Our teen classes are great for older puppies!
My puppy hasn't been fully vaccinated yet, can I still join this Zetland puppy school?
Yes, in fact the most important socialisation period for dogs is 8-12 weeks of age, this is ideal for puppy school as well. Studies show no increased health risks in puppy schools and plenty of benefits. Puppy schools should always be run in private locations, not in public outdoors spaces. All our locations are safe and cleaned with F10 which vets use as well.
I can't make one of the lesson, can I do a catch up lesson?
Yes, you can do a catch up lesson at any of our other available classes.
How many puppies are in each Zetland puppy class?
Our Zetland puppy classes run with a maximum of 8 puppies per class. This means every puppy and owner gets genuine individual attention throughout each session. It also keeps socialisation structured and calm — far better for learning than a large, overwhelming group.
My puppy is over 16 weeks — can they still attend puppy school?
Our Zetland puppy preschool is designed for puppies up to 16 weeks, within the critical socialisation window. If your pup is older, our Teen Dog Classes are the perfect fit — covering all the foundations and tackling common adolescent behaviours head-on.
What will my puppy learn in the Zetland puppy classes?
Our 4-week puppy class covers basic commands (sit, down, stay, come), socialisation, impulse control, leash manners and common issues like biting and jumping up. You’ll also learn how dogs think, so your training stays effective and consistent at home between classes.
Is the Zetland puppy preschool suitable for small breeds?
Absolutely! Our puppy classes welcome all breeds and sizes. Socialisation is always managed carefully so every puppy — from a tiny Chihuahua to a large Labrador — has a safe, positive experience. Small breeds especially benefit from structured early socialisation.
Is there still availability in the Zetland puppy school?
Check our live booking calendar above — if a Zetland puppy class is sold out it will show as unavailable. If it’s showing, it’s bookable! Classes fill up quickly so we recommend booking as soon as your puppy has had their first vaccination.

Did You Know that 8-12 Weeks Is the Best Time for Puppy School?
A puppy’s most critical developmental window closes around 12 weeks of age. During this short but powerful stage, puppies are naturally more open to learning, adapting, and forming positive associations with the world around them.
If your goal is to raise a confident, well-adjusted, and social adult dog — this is the time to act. Ideally, you should enrol in puppy school before 12 weeks, but the socialisation period continues up until 16 weeks, so if your pup is a little older, it’s not too late.
The Myth of “Wait Until Fully Vaccinated”
Unfortunately, many well-meaning breeders and even some vets still advise waiting until a puppy is fully vaccinated (typically around 16 weeks) before going outside or socialising. Following this outdated advice can mean missing the entire critical socialisation period — and the consequences can be serious.
As trainers, we regularly see puppies who have been over-protected in their early months. They often grow into dogs who struggle with:
Anxiety or fear in new environments
Nervousness around people or dogs
Timid or antisocial behaviours
Reactivity or aggression stemming from fear
These behaviours aren’t the result of bad dogs — they’re the result of missed experiences during their most formative weeks.
What Science Tells Us
Research into canine behaviour shows that puppies go through a sensitive socialisation period that lasts until around 16 weeks. During this time, they are forming core beliefs about what is safe, normal, and acceptable.
If a puppy isn’t gently and positively exposed to a variety of people, dogs, sounds, environments, and everyday experiences in that window, they are far more likely to struggle later in life.
The Bottom Line
Safe, well-managed socialisation during the first 4 months of life is essential. It’s not just about meeting dogs — it’s about learning to feel comfortable and secure in the world.
This is exactly what our puppy school in Zetland is designed to provide: a structured, safe, and positive environment where your puppy can build the foundation for a lifetime of confidence.
