3 Easy Ways to Help Your Dog Adjust To Alone Time

Many of us have been spending a lot more time at home during this COVID-19 pandemic. That means that your best buddy probably got used to you being home all day too. And now that we are returning back to work, it can be a huge and over-whelming change for your dog. Here’s advice from Eazy Dog Training in Rhodes on how to ease your dog back into your normal routine!

These are the signs that your dog might not be taking a change back to normal  well:

  • Vocalization: whining, barking or howling when you leave. A severely anxious dog will continue long after you’re gone, even the whole day. For this you’ll need professional help, don’t hesitate to contact your dog trainer in Rhodes!
  • Destructive chewing.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Drooling, panting and pacing around.

Here are three things you can do to help your dog cope with the change better: 5.

1. Get your dog obsessed with food-stuffed, interactive toys and puzzles. Start when you are home and present. Serve every meal out of a puzzle toy, not a food bowl, so your dog learns to love them. When your dog is happily using the toys, then start using them when you leave the room/house.2. Practice your departure cues. Do you know what do you do when you’re getting ready to leave? Pick up your keys? Put on shoes and your jacket? Well, your dog knows what you do and these things can trigger anxiety! Start doing these thiongs randomly throughout the day, but don’t leave, to desensitise your dog for these leaving cue triggers.

3. Make arrivals and leavings casual and fuzz free. When you leave or come home, don’t make a big deal out of it. Be calm and ignore your dog until he is nice and calm too.

I know you love your dog, but the reality is that you can’t be there for him 24/7. That’s why it’s important to keep the same routine for alone time and independence as you did when you were going to the office even if you are working from home now.
