Part of the issue is that many people expect their dogs to come when called without having trained them to do so. So, the first thing to focus on is: have you trained your dog to come back to you?

The fact is, dogs don’t have a concept of coming back to us without being trained first. They have no understanding of the word come. Therefore, it takes a lot of repetition for dogs to learn what the word ‘come’ means and to respond to it as we would like them to.

Dogs tend to do things that make them happy.

Teaching a good recall involves creating a strong association between your vocal cue and something good happening for the dog. If your dog learns that coming to you leads to good things for him, he will want to come, and will do so consistently. That’s why you need to be prepared to reward your dog with something good every time he comes back to you.

If you are not prepared, you’ll skip a training session. And this will affect your training results.

Sometimes, we “reward” our dog in a negative way.

It’s not unusual for a dog to respond to being called, only to find that he has left the fun of the yard for the boredom of the house. Or all his playmates and freedom to a walk back home on a lead. In these cases, “Come!” becomes a negative thing. In result, the dog is not nearly as willing or interested in coming as he would be otherwise.

Therefore, here are the key points to keep in mind when training your dog a reliable recall

Make recall training a priority.

Figure out what makes your dog want to come to you.

Consistently associate the recall cue with your dog’s favorite things

Most importantly, don’t Assume that your dog will come without being trained to do so!
