Dog Manners Training in Sydney – Impulse Control

Impulse control – the key to teaching dogs calm and polite behaviors

We have all met dogs that jump on people, push them out of their way to get through doors, steal food from their hands and rush their way in and out of the car or the crate.

Dogs can be impatient and pushy.

We tend to put up with these behaviours and the smaller the dog the easier it is to ignore. In humans, impulsivity refers to the urge to act on a whim. It means behaving with only immediate gratification in mind and little consideration for potential consequences. Dogs do this all the time. They have no concept of the future or the consequences of their actions. They simply do what benefits them. When a dog wants something, they want it now!

But luckily, we can teach Alfie and Cookie patience and calm and polite behaviors.

Impulse control -or self-contro- is useful in almost every situation. For example, you might want to be able to hook your dog in front of a cafe for a few minutes without coming back to a full blown barking episode. Dogs need to learn patterns and habits that can help them stay calm and manageable in all situations. This is what dog manners training in Sydney is all about.

Impulse control may be one of the most important concepts to teach any dog.

Unfortunately our own natural tendencies to deal with impulsiveness often get in the way of effective teaching. We seem to forget that we are dealing with animals. When we punish the behavior, we often make it harder for the dog to settle down. Instead, preventing the dog from getting what they want while out of control will make a world of difference. And rewarding for calm and polite behaviors, will teach your dog more beneficial ways to get what they want. Dogs become calmer and easier to control in general.
