Is Your Puppy Prepared for Adulthood?

Have you finished your training… Or do you just think you have?

The most common issue I help people with as an Inner West Sydney Puppy Preschool trainer is completing their training. Most owners have been able to teach the basics of basic obedience commands. But they struggle with the 3 D’s of training: Distance, Duration and Distractions. These are the 3 things you need to finish training to ensure reliable commands.

One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is the assumption that their puppy is trained after they learnt their basic commands at 5 months of age. What they don’t remember is that even our dog becomes a teenager. But never fear. It’s by no means an excuse not to work on the basic training elements when they’re young, but it’s a good idea to be prepared for that time when they start to rebel.

Here is advice from Dog Training Inner West Sydney on how we can prepare our obedient puppy for that time when they make the transition to adulthood.

Training in Different Places: Adding Distractions

Most people train their puppies at home or in their own yard. This is good, but only half of the work that needs to be done. Dogs are situational learners. They will remember well which behaviors are appropriate in certain places. If you want a dog that listens everywhere, you need to train everywhere.

For many owners it comes as a surprise that their dog can’t focus in a new environment or situation.

Training in different environments and situations will teach a puppy that every new place is exciting to learn and perform their basic obedience commands.
