Dog Trainer Eastern Sydney – Why You Should Always Use Treats When Training

The Important Food-Brain Relationship

Did you know that activating a dog’s sense of smell with food not only motivates a dog to learn, but is a valuable tool in changing the way the brain works? Here’s advice from your dog trainer in Eastern Sydney.

Some people think that using food is bribery.

This is incorrect. Food is a great motivator which is needed when training animals. But it can also change the way the dog feels.

There are circuits in the dog’s brain that encourage fear response, seeking and hunting behaviour. When you turn on a dog’s seeker system, by giving him a tasty treat or a toy filled with food this activity will turn on his seeker system and shut off his fear.  So, this means that turning on the thinking brain deactivates the emotional brain.

How to Raise an Emotionally Balanced Dog

Although you should not shelter your dog from the world, care should be taken to avoid bad experienced leading up to emotional upsets. This is because fear memories are not erased by the brain and can be hard to modify. Physical exercise goes a long way in promoting emotional health. I’ve met a lot of dogs that don’t get enough physical exercise. This can cause destruction, vocalizing, hyper reactivity and aggressive responses.

Just like humans, a dog’s emotional well-being is influenced by early experiences. Unstimulating or abusive environments can damage emotional growth resulting in a dog that finds it hard to make social attachments or cope with domestic life. A puppy school is a great way to ensure that you are doing everything you should for your pup’s healthy development.
